Activities Organiser - Job Description and Person Specification

Aim of Homes:

To help Residents to enjoy life to the full, have peace of mind and a sense of security in familiar surroundings in their closing years. This is the Residents’ home and this must always be remembered.

Purpose of Position:

  • To deliver a programme of activities for Residents including activities both within and outside of the Homes.
  • To continually seek to improve our programme of activities to suit wherever possible needs, interests and abilities of all residents.
  • To encourage Residents to remain socially active and to participate in activities keeping in mind that each Resident is an individual who has the right to decide whether to participate or not. The decision of the Resident must be respected at all times.
  • To work with the Care Activities Assistant in coordinating schedules and developing a full programme for all and if required to participate in activities or outings.
  • To support the reception area with other front office staff including receiving guests, answering telephones and whatever other tasks may be required.


  1. Provide a full programme and a diverse range of internal activities and outings for our residents.
  2. Identify locations for outings and arrange driver, volunteer and staff support.
  3. Update our care systems where required with activities information.
  4. Produce flyers and other information if required.
  5. Ensure activities take place in safe environments with suitable sanitary facilities.
  6. Prepare lounges in advance of activities.
  7. Work in close coordination with all other members of the team.


  1. Whilst the job is generally weekdays only, you may be required to attend on weekends or bank holidays from time to time.
  2. You will be expected to participate in Homes fund raising activities such as the Summer Fayre and Coffee Mornings. If these fall outside normal working hours you are still expected to actively participate without remuneration (no more than 3 times a year).
  3. You will ensure the highest Health and Safety standards are maintained at all times for yourself, the Residents and other staff or visitors.
  4. Attend staff meetings and training courses as appropriate.
  5. Comply with all Homes policies and procedures.
  6. Take on any task reasonably requested whether it fits into your job description or not.

Responsible to:  Registered Care Manager

Hours: 9.00am – 5.00pm Tuesday and Thursday with an hour for lunch, but with flexibility built in for occasional weekends, evenings and Bank Hols to cover special occasions. You may join the residents for lunch if you so wish. There is no charge for this.

Person specification:


Recognised certificate in activities eg City and Guilds desirable
Full clean driving licence (willingness to drive the minibus) desirable
NVQ 2 in Health and social care or equivalent desirable

Knowledge and experience:

Experience of working in a care home or similar environment essential
Understanding of Person-Centred care essential
Previous experience in activities organising essential
Experience of working with volunteers desirable
An awareness of CQC regulations desirable

Skills and attributes:

Awareness of Health and Safety regulations essential
A team player able to work effectively with diverse groups and different staff teams essential
Effective communication skills, verbal and written essential
Planning, admin and organisational skills with ability to prioritise workload effectively essential
Good IT skills (Word, Excel, preferably Publisher or similar) essential
Understanding issues of confidentiality essential
Understanding and awareness of the needs of the elderly. essential
