Maintenance Person

We are looking for a maintenance person to replace our current person who is retiring after almost 6 years with us.

The job is a varied and stimulating one which requires regular interaction with residents and staff and may include driving car or the minibus from time to time, assisting with moving resident’s around the Homes, undertaking general maintenance tasks and advising management on issues which may arise.

Accountable to: Trustee Representative

Aim of Homes:

To help residents to enjoy life to the full, have peace of mind and a sense of security in familiar surroundings in their closing years. This is the residents’ home and this must always be remembered.

Purpose of the position:

At BBCH we pride ourselves in providing the highest standards of care in a clean, safe and stimulating environment. The Maintenance Person plays a key role in maintaining our standards and in supporting all other functions throughout the Homes.

Maintenance Person duties:

You will provide efficient and effective support to BBCH and to be responsible for:

  • The general appearance of the buildings
  • Ensuring equipment is maintained in accordance with the required standards
  • Heating and electrical systems operate at optimum efficiency
  • Ensuring the Homes meet health and safety and COSHH regulations particularly in the areas of fire security and legionela
  • Manage the maintenance budget for the Homes
  • Such other tasks which may be required from time to time to ensure you meet the purpose of the position.

Central to every member of staff’s role is to assist the whole team in their duties.

Personal:

Your personal presentation is important, so we have summarised some key points:

  • Take care of your appearance.
  • Wear protective clothing when needed, keeping in mind our high hygiene standards
  • Understand the importance of keeping fit and healthy
  • Promote a high standard of personal hygiene and behaviour
  • Work well with residents and staff.

General:

  1. Care is provided 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, so you may be required to attend on occasional weekends or bank holidays.
  2. You will be expected to participate in Homes fund raising activities such as the Summer Fayre and Coffee Mornings. If these fall outside normal working hours you are still expected to actively participate (no more than 3 times a year).
  3. You will ensure the highest Health and Safety standards are maintained at all times for yourself, the residents and other staff or visitors.
  4. Keep motivated, attend staff meetings, training courses and supervisions as required.
  5. Comply with all Homes policies and procedures. Be polite and courteous to residents, relatives, colleagues and visitors to the Homes.
  6. Take on any task reasonably requested whether it fits into your job description or not. Be prepared to give a little more than is always required.

Hours:

You will be expected to work 35 a week spread over 5 days on a rota which may on occasion include weekends and bank holidays.

You are  expected to report for duty 10 minutes before the specified time, in a fit condition to carry out all required duties.

Coffee, tea and meal breaks are at specific times during the day. However, the needs of the Homes and the residents always come first.

Person specification:

Knowledge and experience:

Experience of working in a similar function desirable
Having a broad knowledge of maintenance skills essential
An awareness of health and safety and COSHH regulations desirable

Skills and attributes:

Ability to work effectively with diverse groups and different staff teams essential
Effective communication skills essential
Planning, admin and organisational skills with ability to prioritise workload effectively desirable
Affinity with IT systems desirable
Understanding issues of confidentiality essential
Understanding and awareness of the needs of the elderly. essential
