Our Residents recently enjoyed a wonderful day out to Sovereign Harbour, accompanied by our dedicated Activities Team and volunteers, where they had the opportunity to experience both the beauty of the harbour and a remarkable piece of maritime history.

The day offered something for everyone. Some Residents enjoyed a relaxing 30-minute boat tour around Sovereign Harbour, taking in the impressive marina, historic waterfront and the many beautiful boats moored along the harbour. Others stepped aboard the magnificent Nao Santa María, a full-size replica of one of the world's most famous ships.
Exploring the impressive wooden vessel gave Residents the chance to discover what life was like for sailors over 500 years ago. The original Santa María was the flagship of Christopher Columbus's expedition and sailed from the Port of Palos de la Frontera, Spain, on 3 August 1492 alongside the Pinta and the Niña. On 12 October 1492, the ship played a central role in one of history's most significant events – the discovery of America – a journey that forever connected two worlds.
As Residents wandered around the decks, they admired the towering masts, intricate rigging and traditional wooden construction. They were fascinated to learn that the ship carried over 300 square metres of sail and more than three kilometres of rope, all used to control the sails and navigate the oceans without modern technology.
The outing sparked plenty of conversation, with many Residents sharing memories of family holidays, time spent by the sea and an interest in maritime history. It was a wonderful opportunity to reminisce, learn something new and enjoy the fresh sea air together.
Trips like these are an important part of life at Bernhard Baron Care Home, providing meaningful experiences that encourage social interaction, stimulate memories and create lasting moments of enjoyment.

A fantastic day was had by all, and everyone returned home with plenty of stories to share after a memorable day exploring Sovereign Harbour and stepping back in time aboard one of history's most iconic ships.
