There was plenty of colour, creativity and conversation in our Activities Centre recently as Residents came together for a delightful gardening activity – creating the beautiful hanging baskets that now brighten the outside of our Activities Centre and dining room.

With tables carefully set up inside the Activities Centre, Residents enjoyed spending the morning working together to design and plant a collection of vibrant summer displays. Wearing gardening aprons and with compost, plants and baskets at the ready, everyone got involved in choosing colours, arranging plants and getting very green-fingered!

The hanging baskets were filled with a wonderful mix of summer flowering plants, including vibrant Calibrachoa (often known as 'Million Bells') in rich shades of magenta, purple, bright yellow and soft pink.

These cheerful flowers are perfect for hanging baskets, producing masses of trumpet-shaped blooms that will continue flowering throughout the summer. Residents also added delicate trailing greenery around the edges, which will gently cascade over the sides as the baskets mature, creating a full and colourful display.

There was plenty of discussion about where each flower should be placed, with everyone sharing ideas to create the perfect arrangement. Gardening is an activity that many of our Residents have enjoyed throughout their lives, so it was wonderful to see memories and gardening tips being shared while everyone worked together.

The activity offered far more than simply planting flowers. Gardening provides gentle physical exercise, encourages creativity and offers wonderful opportunities for social interaction. The familiar scent of fresh compost and flowers also brings back happy memories for many people, making it a truly sensory and therapeutic experience.

Once completed, the baskets were carefully hung outside the Activities Centre and dining room, where they now provide a colourful welcome for Residents, families, visitors and staff alike. Their bright pink, purple and yellow blooms beautifully complement the flint walls of our courtyard and create a cheerful, welcoming space for everyone to enjoy throughout the summer months.

We look forward to watching the flowers flourish over the coming weeks and adding even more colour to our beautiful courtyard.
